As part of Verve Records’ ongoing 60th anniversary celebration, Verve/United Music Enterprises is proud to announce the release of eight essential Diana Krall albums in 180-gram, 2LP vinyl reissues. The renowned pianist and vocalist has called Verve home for the vast majority of her illustrious career, and these new versions of her recordings originally released between 1996 and 2009 showcase many of her finest moments in lustrous vinyl format.
Diana Krall – When I Look Into Your Eyes (Acoustic Sounds) 180g 2LP Gatefold Sleeve
Krall’s fifth studio album made a mark as the first jazz album in 25 years to garner a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
Tommy LiPuma elevates Krall’s sound along the lines of Nat King Cole with an orchestral stamp on eight out of 12 tracks.
It doesn’t take strings, though, to showcase Diana Krall as a hopeless romantic. She does that well enough on her own.

Duke Ellington/Johnny Hodges – Back to Back – Analogue Productions 2x45RPM 200g LP
Several times in his career star alto-saxophone soloist Johnny Hodges struck out on his own, only to return each time to Duke Ellington's band. There seemed to be a constant tension between them, though it was old hat by the time of this recording. In the enclosed notes, critic Michael Ullman examines this complex relationship, suggesting that the blues classics chosen for this program may have been neutral ground. A place where Ellington's unique piano playing could come to the fore and Hodges' irrepressible sensuality could have free rein. This is one of the very best small-group records Ellington ever made — a relaxed, perfectly integrated set of music that truly swings the blues.
Lee Morgan – Taru – Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g Vinyl
Lee Morgan’s 1968 album Taru—which wouldn’t be first released until 1980 as part of the LT Series—found the trumpeter at a crossroads exploring a variety of styles. The band on this outstanding date is notable for several reasons including the elevating presence of guitarist George Benson who delivers inspired solos throughout.
The session also marked Morgan’s first recorded collaboration with tenor saxophonist Bennie Maupin who would play an integral role on future Morgan albums including Caramba! and Live at the Lighthouse. Rounding out the sextet were pianist John Hicks, bassist Reggie Workman, and the ever-inspiriting drummer Billy Higgins.
The six-song set covered a range of stylistic ground including modal jazz (“Avotcja One”), hard-charging post-bop (“Get Yourself Together”), beautiful balladry (“Haeschen” and “Taru, What’s Wrong With You?”), gospel-tinged numbers (“Dee Lawd”), and funky boogaloos (“Durem”).
Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson – Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson Verve 180g Vinyl
Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson is a brilliant undertaking in which Verve’s legendary “house pianist” encountered one of jazz’s most revered giants. A significant part of Peterson’s genius was his ability to be an exceptional pianist and leader, while also being a perfect accompanist when the circumstance demands… and in a situation like this, to be both. Tormé is an uptempo gem that Mel Torme swings to perfection. Nicknamed "The Velvet Fog," Torme was a noted singer, composer, arranger, drummer and actor. This self-titled 1958 studio album was his first record for Verve.

Scott Yanow of AllMusic says in his 4-Star review of Very Tall: “This first matchup on records between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson was so logical that it is surprising it did not occur five years earlier. Originally recorded for Verve and three decades later reissued on this audiophile CD by Mobile Fidelity, the quartet set (which also includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) swings as hard as one might expect. Highlights include ‘On Green Dolphin Street,’ ‘The Work Song,’ ‘John Brown’s Body’ (a jam on ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’) and ‘Reunion Blues.’ Fortunately O.P. and Bags would meet up on records many times in the future (particularly during their Pablo years) but this first effort is a particularly strong set.”
