Herbie Nichols was one of the most highly original and under-recognized pianists and composers in Jazz history. Blue Note founder Alfred Lion consider him to be every bit as unique and important as Thelonious Monk, another singular talent who Lion was the first to record just a few years before he signed Nichols in 1955. Little-known during his lifetime, recognition has begun to grow in recent years for Nichols' incredibly hip, angular compositions such as "The Third World," "2300 Skidoo," "Step Tempest," and "Dance Line," each of which were miniature marvels built with their own sturdy inner logic.

Both are worth having for different sonic reasons and if you have a clean original Rudy Van Gelder cut (A-4) you may think you are set, but that cut is less spacious, somewhat dynamically compressed, has the RVG lower bass roll-off and is definitely less transparent — not that it's bad and some people do like the more 'in your face' excitement. The late James Harris earned the moniker “Shakey Jake” due to his proficiency at dice, but he was equally adept at the blues game. The Arkansas-born, Chicago-based singer and harmonica blower traveled to Rudy Van Gelder’s New Jersey studio in November 1960 to record Mouth Harp Blues.. Jake brought along Jimmie Lee Robinson, the brilliant, fast-fingered guitarist best known for his work with Little Walter’s band. Also making tasty contributions to the session was Robert Banks, the New York R&B and gospel studio organist who, in this case, ably appointed himself as a two-fisted blues piano stylist. Among the 10 selections is the distinctively loping “Easy Baby,” a tune also associated with Jake’s nephew Magic Sam.
