Emerson, Lake & Palmer Push Creative Boundaries on Tarkus: 1971 Prog Staple Features Theatrical Title Track, Diverse Arrangements, and Iconic Armadillo-Themed Cover Art Mastered at MoFi’s California Studio for Audiophile Sound: Mobile Fidelity’s Numbered-Edition Hybrid SACD of 1971 Set Plays with Excellent Clarity, Openness, and Detail Tarkus likely remains the only album in existence that links jazz luminary Dave Brubeck, Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, recording engineer Eddy Offord, Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera, American genius Frank Zappa, and German multi-hyphenate Johann Sebastian Bach. At once diverse, ambitious, and complex, Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s sophomore statement proved fantastically successful and accessible. It reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and, in the U.S., climbed into the Top 10. The 1971 effort also propelled the British group to the forefront of the concert scene and became instantly identifiable via its now-iconic cover art.

Eric Dolphy has sometimes been described as an iconoclast, but in Outward Bound, he was not overturning his idol, Charlie Parker; he was building on Bird’s legacy. So deep was Dolphy’s musicianship, so free his imagination, that he enchanted trailblazers like John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. Partnering in this collection with the brilliant trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and a stunning rhythm section, Dolphy is at a peak of energy and creativity on alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. He and Hubbard work with empathy reminiscent of the young Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Roy Haynes were ideal accompanists and co-conspirators in this widely influential work.
