First Watt SIT-4 Power Amplifier

£4,995.00

The SIT-4 is the First Watt power amplifier using the industrial grade Static Induction Transistors. It is preceded by the ground breaking SIT-1, 2, and 3 and follows their technical philosophy and construction. An important difference in the SIT-4 is the SIT device itself.

The previous three designs used Silicon Carbide to make a custom vertical power Jfet with a low impedance Drain whose character nicely emulated a power Triode tube, but directly operating at the current and voltage that would drive loudspeakers without the requirement for an output transformer.

SITs lend themselves to high quality audio performance with very simple Class A circuits with little or no dependence on other active circuit elements or negative feedback.

The owner’s manual can be downloaded here:

The Common Source mode SIT-1 could do the job surrounded by only passive elements, and the SIT-2 required only bias from a current source. The SIT-3 upped the game with Common Drain design biased by a novel Pass circuit, MUFF (Mu Follower/Follower).

The SIT-4 follows in the Common Source footsteps but ups the game with an industrial SIT. The SIT-1/2/3 gain transistors were rated at a few amps and about 50 watts dissipation.

This amplifier uses a Tokin THF51s rated at 600 volts, 30 amps and 400 watts. As a practical matter, the limitations of the SIT-4 circuit are the size of the heat sinks. And this big Jfet manages a bandwidth of 50 megaHertz…

The circuit of the SIT-4 is simple. Q1 is a new-old-stock Toshiba 2SK170 which drives the Gate of the Q2 SIT, whose output is biased by a mu-follower current source Q3.

The actual circuit is only slightly more complicated.

It is this single-ended Class A simplicity which delivers the much desired sound quality, that nearly pure negative phase 2nd harmonic signature identified so well in the original SIT-1:

The first prototypes of the SIT-4 were operated without feedback, and had lots of this 2nd harmonic quality, but extensive listening tests concluded with a design which used 6 db of feedback to lower this a bit and improve the damping factor. The result is this distortion vs power curve:

You can see where the 2nd harmonic character gives a straight line for distortion vs output power all the way to 10 watts, and then some 3rd harmonic starts bending the line with some compression. Realistically, you can listen to 40 watt peaks before your ears will get start to hurt. Me, I hardly ever need more than a watt, but I know that many, if not most audiophiles want more power and dynamics. Has it really been 12 years of SIT amps? Seems like yesterday…

Ex-Dem Pass Labs XP-22 Preamplifier

Original price was: £9,975.00.Current price is: £8,500.00.
The new design uses double-shielded low noise toroidal transformers in external supply The new design uses double-shielded low noise toroidal transformers in an external supply connected via aviation-grade circular connectors using silver over oxygen-free copper. The power supply is dual mono with two transformers with lower radiated and mechanical noise. Noise is the most prominent part of THD+N at low levels, so by lowering noise we get better resolution and dynamics. The gain circuitry continues to use our favorite transistors from Toshiba but has a larger, higher biased, output stage like the Xs Preamp, and includes auto bias. The larger output stage makes longer, and multiple cable runs easier to drive and gives us the advantage of simplifying our single-ended output circuitry while increasing performance. The volume control is a single stage instead of two stages and has more range; it is quieter and more accurate. This is the same volume control as used in the XP-30. Overall this makes for a quieter, more neutral, musical, and versatile control center for your system. The XP-22 measures spectacularly well — but it really stands out sonically.

First Watt F7 Power Amplifier

£4,000.00
The F7 is a very unique power amplifier.
Aa two-stage push-pull JFET/MOSFET topology with fewer parts than any First Watt amplifier to date and incorporating a very interesting balance of very low negative voltage feedback and a little bit of positive current feedback to give an astonishing measure of control over reactive loudspeaker loads.

First Watt Sit-5 Power Amplifier

£4,995.00
The SIT-5 is the most recent amplifier produced by First Watt, and is the fifth to use a Static Induction Transistor (SIT) as the power amplifying device. In 2011 we introduced our first SIT amplifier using a custom Silicon Carbide (SiC) transistor part made by SemiSouth. The amplifier also used a single power device, operating without feedback in single-ended Class A Common-Source mode to deliver 10 watts of power emulating the characteristic of a Triode, but operating at voltage and currents directly needed by loudspeakers, eliminating the output transformer.

Pass Labs HPA-1 Headphone Amplifier

£3,695.00
  • I ONLY EX-DEM WITH ALL PACKING AND FULL WARRANTY
  • The HPA-1 headphone amplifier was designed ground-up to become what we believe is one of the very best sounding headphone amplifiers available today. With low feedback, wide bandwidth and a direct coupled MOSFET output stage, this musical instrument drives even the most difficult headphone loads with ease, power and grace. The HPA-1 also functions as a line-level preamplifier that sonically rivals much higher-priced competition. The measured performance is superb and the sound even better.

Phasemation EA-550 Phono Monoblocks (Pair)

£6,995.00
A pair of highly sophisticated phono monoblocks (2 units), all discreet, all-stage symmetric non-feedback circuit that draws out the music’s reality and the artist’s passion The design brief for the EA 550 was to eliminate the smallest discrepancies by utilising a pair of semiconductor phono amplifiers. In addition, the built-in MC transformer was newly designed incorporating a special split winding structure that uses a high pure copper wire PC-TripleC as the secondary winding material.
