Lady Soul, released in January 1968, was one of Aretha Franklin’s finest and most popular albums — a No. 2 record that featured her take on Carole King’s “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman” and the immortal “Chain of Fools.” Just a landmark statement of female empowerment and inspired vocal performance. Other massive hits include “(Sweet, Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Ain’t No Way.”

Lady Soul topped the R&B charts and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Aretha also provides her own unique and soulful interpretations of James Brown’s “Money Won’t Change You,” Ray Charles’ “Come Back Baby” and Curtis Mayfield’s civil rights anthem, “People Get Ready.” Rolling Stone named Aretha Franklin as the No. 1 Greatest Singer of All Time and it’s all in evidence on Lady Soul.

So deep was Dolphy’s musicianship, so free his imagination, that he enchanted trailblazers like John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. Partnering in this collection with the brilliant trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and a stunning rhythm section, Dolphy is at a peak of energy and creativity on alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. He and Hubbard work with empathy reminiscent of the young Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Roy Haynes were ideal accompanists and co-conspirators in this widely influential work.

The guts of the story are this: While on tour with the Bar-Kays in August 1967, Otis Redding’s popularity was rising, and he was inundated with fans at his hotel in downtown San Francisco. Looking for a retreat, he accepted rock concert impresario Bill Graham’s offer to stay at his houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California. Inspired, Redding started writing the lines, “Sittin’ in the morning sun, I’ll be sittin’ when the evening comes” and the first verse of a song, under the abbreviated title “Dock of the Bay.”

Roy Haynes was just about everywhere in the golden age of jazz, recording classic albums with some of the most legendary names of the genre: Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner and Jackie McLean. The hard-bop-verging-on-post-bop Out Of The Afternoon is an excellent example of the adventurous spirit that was taking flight in the jazz world in the early 1960s.
