How it works
The GC1.1 unit is a passive device, meaning it does not require an external power source. It is housed in an acrylic box containing proprietary materials that absorb high-frequency noise, from the high kilohertz range up to several gigahertz, and dissipate it as heat.
The GC1.1 is connected to an audio component via a special cable that terminates in a 4mm banana plug at the Ground Control end. The other end of the cable can have various connectors, such as RCA, USB, or XLR, to plug into any unused input, output, or ground connection on a device.
When connected, the GC1.1 acts as a “sink” for noise, draining unwanted electrical energy from the audio component’s signal ground or chassis ground.
The manufacturer, Computer Audio Design (CAD), recommends connecting the GC1.1 to the noisiest component in the system first, such as a computer, streamer, or digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
What it does for sound quality
According to CAD and reviewers, the reduction of high-frequency noise from a GC1.1 can lead to a number of sonic improvements:
Wider and deeper soundstage: Reviewers have noted a more expansive and defined stereo image.
Improved dynamics and timing: Music sounds more rhythmic, with sharper transients and better pace.
Greater clarity: Instruments are better defined and emerge from a “blacker” or quieter background.
Increased resolution: Listeners may perceive a greater sense of detail and texture in recordings.
Usage notes
Passive operation: The GC1.1 is not powered and has no lights, switches, or controls.
Connection points: It can be connected to any audio component with an unused socket. It can also be connected to the mains earth connection on a power distribution block.
Dedicated cables: CAD provides specific grounding cables with low-impedance solid-core conductors, which are sold separately and necessary for the unit to function as intended.
Avoid mixing analog and digital: It is advised to avoid sharing a single GC1.1 between analog and digital components, as digital noise could compromise sensitive analog signals.
