Gregg Allman – Midnight Rider / These Days – Analogue Productions 45 rpm Vinyl Single

£45.00

Gregg Allman’s pained, growling voice joins with horns and gospelish backing vocals to add a personal, often mournful feel on songs on Laid Back. Radio response was strong to the opening track, the loping remake of “Midnight Rider.” It’s a convincing version of the man’s music.

“Gregg Allman’s voice came sailing clear throughout the room, the band punched through the air with force and clarity. Impressively, the dial was only set at 11 o’clock-and by the time I pushed the envelope up to around two (just for the heck of it), there wasn’t a drop of distortion created-just more clean air in the volume. As far as my ears were concerned, Chad’s special single release of these two Gregg Allman performances turned out to be a sonic victory.” — Wayne Goins, Positive-Feedback.com, Issue 98, Aug. 22, 2018. Gregg Allman’s 1973 solo album debut also became his biggest hit, a No. 13 LP featuring his Top 20 chart classic “Midnight Rider.” From the Analogue Productions sparkling Laid Back reissue now comes a 12-inch single featuring two classic cuts from that esteemed LP. Side one is “Midnight Rider.” Side two is “These Days.” Cut at 45 RPM for reduced distortion and better high frequency reproduction.

Gregg Allman’s pained, growling voice joins with horns and gospelish backing vocals to add a personal, often mournful feel on songs on Laid Back. Radio response was strong to the opening track, the loping remake of “Midnight Rider.” It’s a convincing version of the man’s music.

“It’s one of the most iconic, universally-recognized, most-played songs there is. But it’s also one of the best-recorded examples of a big-time hit,” Acoustic Sounds/Quality Record Pressings owner Chad Kassem says. “It’s never sounded better than this, cut at 45 RPM and on its own 12-inch record side.”

Likewise, the B-side track “These Days,” he says, is “a classic Jackson Browne tune, covered beautifullly here by Allman.”

Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne did more than figuratively reach for the sky on Eldorado. Daring to be bold, and creating imaginative worlds that invite the listener to escape the mundane, the visionary composer-musician achieved a multidisciplinary fantasia and, in the process, a prog-rock landmark. Nearly 50 years later, the concept album's brilliance can be experienced like never before in cinematic fashion.
