Vinyl Essentials Part 2 | LP Storage + Care
We all know that vinyl never died (at least audiophiles of a certain age do anyway) and as the famous Radio 1 DJ the late John Peel once said….Vinyl is not dead, it just needs a new turntable.
To get the very best sound quality from your precious black stuff a record cleaning machine is essential, that was covered in our previous blog post here. Meticulous cleaning although essential is just a small part of vinyl care. After all you would not spend £30,000 on a new car and not take it for a service or maintain it with an oil and water check every week. Although most of us have vinyl that cost slightly less than a new car, our entire collections probably exceed that figure so they need to be cared for properly.
Storage should also be in an upright position with none resting with any space in between, ideally a small gap to enable our fingers to pull the required LP out to either clean it or play it! After many years wrestling with inferior vinyl storage systems many ones costing £100’s there is now a default vinyl storage rack and it will come as no surprise to veteran audiophiles that the ideal storage solution comes from IKEA. Yes the famous Swedish furniture chain found in 1943 just happen to make the best vinyl storage system going and at an affordable price too.
LP’s are stored upright and many audiophiles catalogue them either alphabetically or in genre, we all have our own ideas on that one. I have just discovered the perfect accessory for this important job and it’s made in California, USA. A set of real wood record dividers made by Kate Koeppel Design, a true work of art and very funky! See them here on the MCRU Website.
The dividers are sold in sets of 26 and are a must have accessory if you want to catalogue your vinyl in style! We have ours in use already. They are in stock and shipped from the UK so no import duties to pay and waiting for customs clearance!
