MCRU have used the Technics SL1210 for over 20 years. It has now become the number 1 tweakable audiophile turntable worldwide with many company’s offering up-grades to enhance its performance. At MCRU we have tried and used many of the up-grades ourselves including ones from other suppliers. We believe ours offer outstanding performance and un-beatable value for money.
We offer a series of packs for up-grading your “Techy”, this one being our entry level pack. We are of the opinion that the best place to start with your Techy is to remove the stock power supply and fit a fully regulated linear power supply, this involves soldering 1 wire only. After removing the stock psu ( 10 minute job) the new power supply needs 1 wire soldering to the pcb and that is it. Full instructions are provided or we can carry out the work for you by collecting your Techy using UPS couriers and returning the deck with the psu installed. Best of all our entry level regulated power supply costs under £150 and is based on the multi award winning Longdog Audio design that has been given 5 stars on no less than 4 different occasions by hi-fi choice magazine. The power supply as standard is wired with Kimber cable specially optimized for mains voltage, it has an IEC inlet to attach the supplied mains power lead which will have a plug to suit your country as we ship worldwide and build the power supply to suit wherever you live if it is UK, EU, USA, Australia, Japan etc, etc.
What your Techy is supported by is of vital importance, in that we mean the feet. For a start keep the original technics feet as they are not all that bad and fit a set of our “Techniboots” isolation feet which simply slot over the existing Technics feet provide extra isolation and resonance control. This unique design is sold to audiophiles worldwide and all have reported beter sound quality using the boots.
The 3rd item in our starter up-grade kit as a replacement mat for the Techy. We manufacture our own mat made from a mixture of cork and rubber which fits the SL1200/1210 perfectly. It is a 2 piece design for use with standard vinyl and 180/200g vinyl. All in all these 3 up-grades will enhance the musical performance of your Techy until funds allow further up-grades of which we can advise on based on our 20+ years using this turntable.

Here’s the problem:
To create a stable, wide diameter support for the record, that doesn’t move. Conventionally platters have either thickness or a sizeable edge. The trouble is the standard 1200 / 1210 series platters lack both! We are effectively left with a disc, severe ringing is the natural consequence. (For proof we need only examine the original metal offering: Place a finger through a hole, tap it gently and “feel” the edge. The all too familiar uncontrolled, vibrating “Klong” confirms the problem: The edge is moving.) One can try changing material: Glass…ceramics…plastics. In all cases, tap the edge and you can still actually feel movement. …And if you can feel it, the stylus can read it. It turns out that this is in fact a difficult problem to solve.A creative solution was needed:
