“I have an original Uniti and a UnitiServe connected via a Gigaswitch using Audioquest Cinnamon CAT 7 cable, driving a pair of PMC Twenty.21 speakers – so “bottom range” Hi-Fi (according to some). The linear supply has taken the whole system to a new level. More fine detail, better bass, with transients that can make me jump ! An amazing improvement straight from the box. “Portable gear can be underpowered and a real compromise with the battle between usability and performance levels, so it can be a worrisome thing to buy an amp at this price level that is running from a battery as a portable unit.
Have no worries. This DAC is a an absolute powerhouse and drives even difficult headphones well.
The choice of inputs and amount of power delivered to headphones is really well thought out. For instance, it can drive an HE6 which is no mean task and at the other end of the sensitivity scale, a Fostex TH900. You can set three levels of power and also put more resistance in the way via a little switch underneath for iems, which is what I used for the Fostex. For the HE6 or LCD2, you just let it roar away on full gain. Very nice feature.
You can input via the mini jack and use the device purely as an ordinary amp or go in via the usb input which is absolutely top notch with the level of files that you can play into it. Hi resolution files going in via usb are stunning to say the least.
It also has phono outputs so you can use it as a preamp. Many uses for this device.
The dac is built like a tank and comes with a nifty little bag with a gap in the back to push wires through if you wish to use it in the bag, plus different connection options. It comes with various adapters too.
I think that it is really worth the price since the level of detail and the timbre are a delight. The amp just disappears through headphones. A great listen indeed.
Lastly, I have to mention the level of service from David. He is quick to get the order out to you and in my case, a minor problem was sorted so quickly and easily that I would recommend buying from MCRU without reservation. No question.
I have never bought from this company before but I was bowled over from the level of response that I got from David in particular. He really goes the extra mile to please.
This is an excellent DAC and if I am looking for any more specialised items, I won’t hesitate to return.”

“I replaced the standard 13A Fuse in an AudioQuest NRG2 mains power cable that’s feeding my audio system with an SR Red 13 A Fuse and it brings noticeable improvements. Think of it like it’s improving an already good power cable or interconnect , so you’re going to get better soundstage , improved mids , extra detail and treble extension. Do try the fuse in both directions when fitting as there’s definitely one way that sounds correct. I think you could over-upgrade an already good sounding system by fitting too many of these high end fuses , but a few in the right places will work well. Headphone listener’s , like myself , will enjoy experimenting with these SR Red mains fuses to bring the best out of your system.”

“Aside from the practical benefits this plug brings, in allowing the fitting of very thick cables, I was very pleasantly surprised by the sonic benefits – bass was certainly firmer, tighter and clearer, in fact the whole spectrum sounded like it had been given a spring clean and polish. Lyrics that had previously been a little difficult to make out were now lucid, and grating noise effects became tolerable, but without any lessening of dynamics, in fact an improvement in that area. In case you think this is just a case of overactive imagination, I had two exact runs of cable with the same IEC, but different plug, so I could make a valid comparison. The other plug was a silver plated MK, both plugs using the same silver plated Busman fuse. Results could vary depending on your mains quality and existing cabling, but for me, it certainly did the trick. I got an even better result after switching the Cratos power cable for the new Furutech nano cable.”

“Furutech look like they have hit the jackpot here – a relatively affordable cable, with superb sonic performance. It’s very thick, so you need a plug like Furutech or MS Audio to accommodate, but it’s well worth it. I would describe its sound as very, very clean and fresh, but not in harsh way at all. In my setup, it just made everything easier to listen to, even outside of the ‘good’ night time periods. Supposedly has a long burn-in time, but I am more than happy with the ‘raw’ sound. I have tried a number of power cables, up until now only the Black Rhodium Cratos did anything worth having, but this beats it all ends up, either on source or amp.”

“I upgraded all the mains cables in my system, using this cable and Furutech Gold mains plugs and Furutech IEC connectors. The cable is quite stiff which made DIY fitting of the connectors a little slow, but it’s worth taking care and the extra time to do a neat job.
I noticed a big improvement in the sound immediately, top end less harsh and more detailed, and much more width and depth to the soundstage. Bass is ‘bloom’ substantially reduced. This was all without any burn in time, so more improvements to come over the next few weeks, I expect. Not a cheap upgrade, but compared to many of the more exotic high-end cables on the market, very good value for the improvements made.”

“I bought the 3.5mm-3.5mm 1.5m version to replace the stock cable with my Philips Fidelio X2 headphones and the sound has improved in every way, surpassing my expectations. Previously I had bought a cheaper 1.5m Fisual cable which was audibly still overall better than the original Philips but no where to the extent of this Furutech. The Furutech is well made, looks great and more importantly delivers from a sonic angle. Even though it works out as a quarter of the headphone’s full price it is still a worthwhile upgrade. “This is a lovely plug, well made and easy to work with once you realise you need to extract the 3 contacts from the plug in order to wrap the wire round them. With thick wire it’s quite a challenge to get everything lined up in order to put it back together again, but with thinner wire it would probably have been much easier. Overall it’s pretty good but give yourself an hour to wire it with a “challenging” cable such as the Belden.”

“From the start it was clear that this interconnect was special. I used it to replace either a VdH cable that I thought was the best ‘natural’ sounding interconnect when I bought it, or to replace an Atlas interconnect which always added a little excitement. Both interconnects have been well reviewed and remain the favourites of some professional reviewers. In either case the MCRU No.1 was better – both at relaying a natural sound and delivering excitment with authority. Here are some notes from the first 30 hours use.
1 hour – Bella Hardy – female vocals clearer and more ‘real’. Bass well extended.
5 hours – Unthanks -Mount the Air- complex sections easier to follow and instruments sound more natural
10 hours – Walter Trout ‘The blues came calling’ – The band are playing together. Bass has real impact and control. Easy to follow the bass and guitar lines even when the drummer gets rather enthusiastic!
15 hours – Cannonball Adderley – trumpet has a nice brassy edge – double bass has texture, notes clear and feels ‘real’ – piano sounds real.
18 hours Schubert ‘Death and the Maiden’. String quartets can be very revealing. Here the four instruments occupy clear areas of the stage and sound natural. Hall ambience and reverberation is able to be heard throughout the performance. The best I have heard this CD sound – and It has been played every week or two, and therefore on every iteration of my system, for the last 10 years!
20 hours – June Tabor ‘Aleyn’ – Vocal sounds real – reverberation from recording venue clear and appropriate – accompanying instruments clearly recorded and the result is a moving and coherent performance.
25 hours – Eleanor McEvoy ‘Alone’. Studio ambience bathes the sound of her voice. The instruments sound real and very much as she sounded when I last saw her performing live.
30 hours -Lisa Carthy ‘Dreams of breathing underwater’. Wow. Last time I listened to this the instrumentation didn’t make sense. Now it does! Not your traditional ‘folk’ backing but an extremely effective mix of electronica and ‘real’ instruments around a clear and realistic vocal. Bass sounds have real textures and can be distinguished easily from each other.
So, in summary, this interconnect delivers! It offers natural sound across the whole frquency range, provides a ‘black’ space between notes (i.e.it has low background noise and adds very litlle to the signal) and exhibits a clear and coherent sense of timing in the music it transfers (assuming of course that the musicians are playing in time!). “
